[TSB] - IL2022-002 MLK Gearbox Grease Replacement

Affected Date Range: From Initial Launch. Hoists manufactured from September 19, 2022 onward will already have the replacement lithium based grease (Mobil XHP 222). First hoist serial number with the replacement grease is: KTH037-0919-22

Action Required:

When servicing a hoist lubed with the former clay-based grease: thoroughly clean the gearbox of old grease before adding the new lithium based grease and reassembling the hoist. This will minimize cross-contamination of the two greases.

Issue Description: 

IR #11 grease (Aeroshell 7) and the approved alternative (Anderol 786) are not available due to global supply constraints. Ingersoll Rand evaluated available greases and chose Mobil XHP 222 grease for use in the MLK gearbox. Mobil XHP 222 will be procured outside of the Ingersoll Rand systems. This new grease is already used in other Ingersoll Rand products, like our ARO hoists, so service centers may have this on hand.

It is important to note that the former Aeroshell 7 grease is clay-based, and Mobil XHP 222 is lithium based grease. These greases are not backwards compatible. Mixing lithium based grease with a clay-based grease will dilute the applied grease.

The application instructions for the Mobil XHP 222 are nearly the same as the Aeroshell 7 grease. You will need to apply a coating of the Mobil XHP 222 to the planet gear bearings, the brake driver bearing, and the gearing.

• To start, work a liberal amount of Mobil XHP 222 grease into the bore of the planet gear bearings, making certain that each of the individual needles or rollers are covered.

• Next, wipe a thin film of Mobil XHP 222 grease on both faces of one of the planet gears, and place a planet gear thrust washer against each face; the grease will retain it in position.

• Lastly, work a liberal amount of the grease into the bore of the brake driver bearing, making certain that each individual needle or roller is covered.

• You must ensure the old grease is cleaned off prior to applying Mobil XHP 222, if the old grease is a clay-based grease. MLK Maintenance manual 47099007 discusses full details on Mobil XHP 222 grease application in the gearbox.

Material Disposition:

Hold material 30 days for warrantable repairs, and follow instructions in the Warranty system for material return or discard.  If non-warrantable, dispose of parts properly in accordance with local regulations.
