Use this article for safe first-level checks when an EVLK Series E‑LIFT™ Electric Chain Hoist does not operate as expected.

Safety Notice: Do not troubleshoot while a load is suspended unless the load is secured and the area is controlled. Before inspecting electrical connections, the brake, gearbox, or internal components, remove the load, isolate power, and follow site lockout/tagout procedures.
Start With These Checks
Before using a symptom-specific section, confirm that:
- The hoist is connected to the correct power supply.
- The Emergency Stop is released.
- The pendant and visible cables are undamaged.
- The load is within the hoist’s rated capacity.
- The load chain is not twisted, kinked, jammed, or obstructed.
- The hooks and hook latches are in usable condition.
- The hoist is not at its upper or lower travel limit.
- The work area and load path are clear.
Do not bypass a limit switch, overload device, Emergency Stop, or other safety feature to restore operation.
The Hoist Does Not Operate
- Confirm that the Emergency Stop is released.
- Verify that power is available to the hoist.
- Check visible cables, pendant controls, and connectors for damage.
- Confirm that the hoist is not at an upper or lower limit.
- Confirm that the load does not exceed the rated capacity.
- Check that the load chain is not jammed or obstructed.
- If the hoist is trolley-mounted, confirm that the trolley or beam does not interfere with hoist movement.
If the hoist still does not operate, remove it from service. Electrical testing and internal repairs must be completed by qualified personnel.
The Hoist Moves in the Wrong Direction
If pressing the pendant’s UP control lowers the hook, or pressing DOWN raises the hook, the hoist may be incorrectly phased.
Do not continue operating the hoist. A qualified installer or electrician must isolate power and correct the phase sequence. For three-phase models, this typically requires interchanging supply wires L1 and L2.
The Hoist Stops at a Travel Limit
Upper and lower limit switches protect the hoist at the ends of its approved chain travel range.
| Condition | Safe action |
|---|---|
| Hoist stops at the upper limit | Lower the hook or load safely. Do not continue trying to raise it. |
| Hoist stops at the lower limit | Raise the hook or load safely. Do not continue trying to lower it. |
| Hoist does not stop at a limit | Remove the hoist from service immediately. Do not use it until qualified personnel inspect and repair the limit-switch system. |
| Hoist stops before an expected travel limit | Check for an obstruction, chain binding, or a site-specific travel restriction. If the cause is not visible, contact service. |
Do not use limit switches as normal operating stops.
The Load Chain Binds, Jumps, or Does Not Feed Correctly
Stop operating the hoist if the load chain binds, jumps, catches, or does not enter the chain bucket correctly.
Check for:
- A twisted, kinked, dry, corroded, or visibly damaged chain
- Foreign material or an obstruction in the chain path
- A chain bucket that is damaged, loose, full, or interfering with chain travel
- A load that is pulling the chain at an angle
- An improperly attached load or handling device
Do not attempt to force the chain through the hoist. Inspect and lubricate the chain only as permitted in Inspecting and Maintaining an EVLK Electric Chain Hoist. If the condition continues, remove the hoist from service.
The Hoist Makes Unusual Noise or Vibrates
Grinding, rattling, scraping, or excessive vibration can indicate a mechanical issue.
- Stop the hoist and lower the load safely.
- Inspect the load chain, hooks, chain bucket, visible fasteners, and trolley connections.
- Check for an external obstruction or contact between the hoist and surrounding equipment.
- Do not continue operating the hoist “to see if it clears.”
Contact authorized service personnel if the condition continues or if the brake, gearbox, motor, trolley drive, or internal components may be involved.
The Pendant Does Not Respond Correctly
If a pendant button does not respond, sticks, or produces inconsistent movement:
- Stop operating the hoist.
- Check the pendant housing and cable for visible damage.
- Confirm that the Emergency Stop is fully released.
- Check that the pendant cable is not pinched, pulled tight, or damaged.
- Do not open the pendant or repair internal wiring unless you are qualified and authorized.
For motorized-trolley models, confirm that you are using the pendant controls intended for the installed configuration.
The Trolley Does Not Move Correctly
For trolley-mounted hoists, check the following:
- The load is centered beneath the trolley.
- The beam or runway is clear.
- The trolley wheels are not obstructed.
- The trolley has not reached an end stop.
- The load is not causing excessive swing or side pull.
- Visible trolley hardware is secure and undamaged.
Do not adjust trolley spacing, beam clearance, motorized-trolley wiring, or travel components unless you are qualified to perform the work.
The Hoist Overheats, Drifts, or Will Not Hold a Load
Remove the hoist from service immediately if:
- The hoist repeatedly overheats.
- The load drifts, slips, or cannot be held in position.
- The brake does not engage as expected.
- The hoist operates intermittently.
- The load moves without a pendant command.
These conditions may involve the brake, motor, overload protection, electrical controls, or internal mechanical components. Do not attempt field repair unless you are authorized to do so.
When to Contact Service Immediately
Contact qualified service personnel if you find:
- Damaged, stretched, twisted, or corroded load chain
- Cracked, deformed, or excessively worn hooks
- A damaged pendant, cable, electrical enclosure, or connector
- A limit switch or Emergency Stop that does not function correctly
- Repeated chain binding, abnormal noise, vibration, or overheating
- Incorrect pendant direction after installation
- Load drift, brake concerns, or unexpected movement
- A problem that remains after the safe checks in this article
