Regular inspection helps identify wire-rope wear, loose components, control issues, and safety-device problems before they affect operation. This article applies to current E‑LIFT™ Series Electric Intelligent Balancers with EIS inline slide-control handles.
For normal operating instructions, see Operating an E‑LIFT Electric Intelligent Balancer.
For model information, see Exploring the E‑LIFT™ Series Electric Intelligent Balancer.
Safety Notice: Before performing maintenance that requires access to the balancer, remove the load, isolate the power supply, and follow site lockout/tagout procedures. Do not open the power unit or perform repair work unless you are authorized and trained to do so.
Before You Begin
Use the following items for routine visual inspection and approved basic care:
- Adequate lighting
- Clean, lint-free cloths
- Approved cleaning materials
- Required personal protective equipment
- Site inspection record or checklist
Do not use damaged equipment. If you identify a condition that could affect safe operation, remove the balancer from service and contact authorized personnel.
Inspect Before Each Shift
Before the start of each shift, inspect the balancer and the connected handling device for visible damage or unsafe conditions.
Check the following:
- Wire rope: Look for broken strands, kinks, crushing, corrosion, abrasion, flattening, loose sections, or other visible damage.
- Wire-rope end connections: Check the connections at the handle, swivel assembly, hook, or attached handling device.
- Hook and handling device: Inspect for cracks, deformation, damage, missing retaining features, or loose mounting hardware.
- Handle and cables: Confirm that the inline handle, display, Emergency Stop, signal cable, and visible wiring are secure and undamaged.
- Fasteners and attachments: Check that visible fasteners, clamps, and mounting connections are secure.
- Limit-switch components: Check for obvious damage, looseness, contamination, or obstruction.
- Work area: Confirm that the intended travel path is clear and that the equipment can be operated safely.
Do not attempt to repair a damaged wire rope or replace it with a non-genuine part. Stop using the balancer and contact authorized service personnel.
Test Safety Functions
Complete functional checks at the beginning of the shift or according to site procedures. Perform tests with a clear travel path and a controlled load condition.
Verify that:
- The Emergency Stop stops lifting movement when pressed.
- The balancer enters Handle Mode and responds correctly to handle movement.
- The balancer stops or restricts movement as expected at the upper and lower travel limits.
- The display does not show an active alarm.
- Float Mode operates correctly when it is enabled for the application.
If the balancer moves unexpectedly, does not stop at a limit, or displays an alarm, remove it from service. See Troubleshooting an E‑LIFT Electric Intelligent Balancer for safe first-level checks.
Perform Monthly Inspection and Basic Care
At least monthly, or more often in demanding applications, authorized maintenance personnel should inspect the following:
- All accessible fasteners for tightness, wear, or cracking
- Wire-rope condition and spooling
- Handle terminals and visible electrical connections for looseness, damage, or dust accumulation
- Sensor faces and photoelectric-switch areas for contamination
- Upper and lower limit switches and deceleration sensors for correct operation
- Hook, control handle, and attached handling device for correct position and condition
- Trolley, rail, support, and equipment connections for loose hardware, damage, or abnormal wear
Clean accessible sensor faces and external surfaces using approved methods. Do not use cleaning methods that could force debris or moisture into electrical components.
Do not alter operating parameters as part of routine maintenance. If a setting appears incorrect, contact an authorized service provider.
Inspect More Frequently When Conditions Require It
Increase inspection frequency when the balancer is used in conditions such as:
- High-duty or continuous operation
- Repetitive high-load handling
- Dusty, dirty, humid, or corrosive environments
- Frequent contact with fixtures, tooling, or moving equipment
- Applications with long travel, tight clearances, or complex handling devices
Pay particular attention to wire-rope wear, handling-device connections, sensor cleanliness, and the condition of cables and controls.
When to Contact Service
Stop using the balancer and contact authorized service personnel if you find:
- Broken, kinked, corroded, frayed, crushed, or improperly spooled wire rope
- Damaged hooks, handling devices, mounting hardware, or load-support components
- A loose or damaged handle, cable, connector, or display
- Repeated alarms, unusual noise, vibration, rattling, or overheating
- A limit switch, rope-slack device, or Emergency Stop that does not function correctly
- Unexpected Float Mode behavior or unexplained movement
- Damage inside the power unit or any condition requiring the enclosure to be opened
Maintenance and Service Boundaries
Routine inspection does not include component replacement, electrical repair, or parameter recovery. The following work should be performed only by authorized service personnel:
- Replacing the wire rope, load cell, handle, main board, or servo-drive components
- Opening the power unit or servo drive
- Performing handle calibration to correct a sensor issue
- Replacing the servo-drive battery or initializing absolute-position settings
- Importing parameters after a main-board replacement
- Repairing safety devices or internal electrical connections
