Use this article to operate a current E‑LIFT™ Series Electric Intelligent Balancer with an EIS inline slide-control handle. These balancers are designed for industrial load handling and precise positioning.
For model capacities, product features, and available documentation, see Exploring the E‑LIFT™ Series Electric Intelligent Balancer.
Safety Notice: Do not use the balancer to lift, support, or transport people. Do not exceed the rated capacity, operate damaged equipment, use the equipment outdoors or in an explosive atmosphere, or bypass any safety device.
Before You Begin
Before each use:
- Confirm that the load, handling device, and any attachments are within the balancer’s rated capacity.
- Inspect the wire rope, hook or handling device, cables, handle, and visible fasteners for damage, wear, or looseness.
- Confirm that the work area is clear and that you can see the load throughout its intended travel path.
- Make sure only one operator is controlling the balancer.
- Check that the emergency-stop button is released and no alarm is displayed.
- Do not use the balancer if the wire rope is loose, damaged, improperly spooled, or obstructed.
For scheduled inspection requirements, see Inspecting and Maintaining an E‑LIFT Electric Intelligent Balancer.
Understand the Operating Modes
The balancer can operate in the following modes:
- Lock Mode: The load does not move through the handle control.
- Handle Mode: The operator uses the inline slide-control handle to raise or lower the load.
- Float Mode: The operator guides a properly supported load directly by hand for controlled positioning.
- Float Unload Mode or Unload Mode: Available only when configured for the application. These modes help place a load during an approved unloading or assembly task.
Do not change mode settings, speed settings, virtual limits, or other parameters. Contact authorized personnel for assistance.
Move a Load in Handle Mode
- Stand in a stable position with a clear view of the load and travel path.
- Hold the inline slide-control handle. When the handle detects your hand and no alarm is present, the balancer enters Handle Mode.
- Move the handle upward to raise the load or downward to lower it.
- Return the handle toward its center position to reduce movement and stop the load.
- Move the handle farther from center only as needed. The balancer moves faster as the handle is moved farther from its center position.
- Release the handle when the load is in the required position. The balancer returns to Lock Mode when the handle is no longer in use.
Use Float Mode for Precise Positioning
Float Mode allows you to guide a supported load directly by hand. Use it only when the application has been set up for Float Mode and you have been trained on the task.
- Use Handle Mode to raise or lower the load to a suitable starting height.
- Release the handle so the balancer enters Lock Mode.
- Without touching the handle area, press and hold the ESC button for approximately two seconds.
- Confirm that the handle display shows Float Mode.
- Hold the load or approved handling device—not the control handle—and apply gentle upward or downward force to position it.
- To exit Float Mode, hold the handle to return to Handle Mode.
When using Float Mode:
- Do not add or remove weight while Float Mode is starting.
- Do not apply sudden force to the load.
- Restart Float Mode whenever the load weight changes.
- If Float Mode times out or the balancer exits the mode, return to Handle Mode and restart only when it is safe to do so.
Understand Safety-Device Responses
The balancer may restrict movement to protect the operator, load, or equipment.
| If this occurs | The balancer may allow | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Upper travel limit is reached | Downward movement only | Move the load down. Do not continue trying to raise it. |
| Lower travel limit is reached | Upward movement only | Move the load up. Do not continue trying to lower it. |
| Loose wire rope is detected | Upward movement only | Raise the load only enough to re-tension the rope, then stop and inspect the rope and its spooling. |
| Overload protection activates | Downward movement only | Lower the load safely. Reduce the load or contact qualified personnel if the load is within the rated capacity. |
| Emergency Stop is pressed | No lift movement | Keep the area clear, identify the reason for the stop, and follow site procedures before returning the balancer to service. |
If the balancer displays an alarm, does not move, moves in only one direction unexpectedly, or does not operate correctly in Float Mode, see Troubleshooting an E‑LIFT Electric Intelligent Balancer.
When to Stop and Contact Service
Stop using the balancer and contact authorized service personnel if you notice:
- A damaged, frayed, kinked, loose, or improperly spooled wire rope
- An alarm that does not clear after a safe basic check
- Unusual noise, vibration, rattling, or movement
- A damaged handle, display, cable, hook, or attached handling device
- Repeated overheating or unexpected operation stops
- Any movement that does not match the control input
